I would expect parents to applaud our efforts to help their children become well read, more articulate, more aware.... Not so. Maybe we&amp;#39;ve gone about it the wrong way. Recently I&amp;#39;ve decided to pitch reading as enjoyable (Crazy, I know). &amp;quot;Read for enjoyment,&amp;quot; I say! I don&amp;#39;t really care what it is at first--just turn off the television and READ! And guess what--they are! We shared our books last week, and I got all kinds of books. I&amp;#39;ve caught kids reading in the hall (What?!?!) and when they finish their assignments (Instead of talking?!?!). I don&amp;#39;t know how long we can sustain this enthusiasm, but I&amp;#39;m happy to be able to say, &amp;quot;How&amp;#39;s the Life of Pi coming? What&amp;#39;s going on in Persuasion?&amp;quot; Maybe I&amp;#39;m on to something around here...Thanks for your ideas. &amp;#39;Can&amp;#39;t wait to read some of your recommendations. -Jeanne Foust, MHBS</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1427303902639298441/3203773792566618691/comments/default/7841433330334454588'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1427303902639298441/3203773792566618691/comments/default/7841433330334454588'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.discriminatingreader.com/2009/08/word-about-required-reading.html?showComment=1253067729338#c7841433330334454588' title=''/><author><name>Jeanne</name><uri>http://www.blogger.com/profile/03103216974810768122</uri><email>noreply@blogger.com</email></author><thr:in-reply-to xmlns:thr='http://purl.org/syndication/thread/1.0' href='http://www.discriminatingreader.com/2009/08/word-about-required-reading.html' ref='tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1427303902639298441.post-3203773792566618691' source='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/1427303902639298441/posts/default/3203773792566618691' type='text/html'/></entry></feed>
